Lycoming O-360 Oil Pressure Adjustment

Lycoming O-360 Oil Pressure Adjustment

High oil pressure on Lycoming IO360. My cruise pressure runs in the low 70’s . Today the pressure was normal on takeoff about 15 minutes into the flight I got a light indicating high oil pressure . The pressure was fluctuating between 88 and 91. I cleaned the oil pressure relief and blew out the 2 oil .

10/22/2014  · Scott. In a Lyc higher pressure is better to get more oil to the rocker boxes/valves. It is a ****-poor design to get oil there, and borderline inadequate. Notice that the new Cessnas have much higher oil pressure green ranges than the legacy ones…presumably to help the valves last longer.

Understanding Oil Flow | lycoming.com, O-360 & IO-360 Series Model Specification Summary, 9/19/2018  · The engine is an Lycoming IO-360 A1A. I started out with 60 psi in cruise, with 40 year old spring, #68668 and 4 washers = 60 psi. Changed to new 61084 spring, with 2 washers, ground ran with 75 psi (cold old oil ) Added two more washers with 61084 (now total 4.

This range is indicated by the green arc on the oil pressure gauge. The maximum oil pressure allowed for short durations is 115 psi on most models. The maximum allowable pressure has increased over the years from 100 to 115 psi.

Oil enters the crankcase of most Lycoming Engines near the top of the right rear cylinder where it passes through the pressure-relief valve. There are three types of pressure-relief valve. With either the short or long dome valve, pressure is adjusted by removing the dome and adding or deleting washers which are located under the controlling spring.

One point of confusion I ran into was the tightnening spec for the oil pressure relief valve. According to Lycoming SI 1172C, the valve should be tightened til the gasket contacts the mating surfaces, and then turned another 90 degrees. But, according to another (more recent) Lycoming doc. SS-1776-5-PT1 the torque limit for the oil pressure relief valve is 300 in/lb. I’m not sure which is correct.

11/30/2014  · If you get the engine warmed up to at least 110 degrees F of oil temp and adjust the pressure to 60 psi at 1400rpm on the ground, you will normally be all set, as this adjustment normally yields about 75 psi in cruise at full operating temp, which is the middle of the cruise operating range and the actual yield setting of the relief valve at that oil flow.

1/9/2019  · The adjustment may not be able to raise hot oil pressure at idle as it’s really a pressure relief valve. The pump is a positive displacement type and oil pressure is the result of pump rpm, oil viscosity and all the oil fed clearances within the engine and pump. Loose clearances means lower oil pressure at a given rpm and oil viscosity.
