Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy was a contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language and is considered as one of the pioneers of the Navya movement. He is the sixth person among eight recipients of the Jnanpith Award for the Kannada language, the highest literary honor conferred in India.

U. R . Ananthamurthy Born in Melige village in Thirthahalli taluk on December 21, 1932 had his early education in Durvasamatha Sanskrit school. Educated at University of Birmingham in English literature. studied English and Comparative Literature in Mysore and Birmingham, where, in 1966, he studied for a PhD.
